Maintenance reserve
For each planned project, the tool calculates max(0, expected cost − amount already saved) ÷ months until due. It adds the monthly amounts across projects.
Routine upkeep is entered separately and divided by 12. This separation makes planned replacements visible instead of hiding them inside a single rule of thumb.
Repair or replace
For each option, the tool calculates one-time quote ÷ visitor-estimated years of service + annual operating cost. It then compares the two annualized totals.
This deliberately simple model does not discount future costs, estimate repair failure probability, predict service life, or model changing energy prices. Comparisons are only as useful as the quotes and assumptions entered.
Household-budget context
The CFPB advises homebuyers to include maintenance and repairs in their budget and notes that actual expenses vary with location, climate, and home characteristics such as size, building code, and energy efficiency. This is budgeting guidance, not a repair-price dataset. It informs our explanation of uncertainty but does not supply calculator prices or a universal percentage.

Regional renovation data
The RRPI is a possible source for describing price movements by renovation project and metropolitan area. An index reports change over time; it does not provide a quote for a homeowner’s specific scope. This prototype does not use RRPI values inside its calculators.

Source and update policy
- Each future imported data series should record the publisher, dataset, geographic coverage, unit, reference period, download date, and revision date where available.
- Changing a source, formula, or scope should be recorded alongside the affected page or tool.
- Competitor pages are examples of market formats, not authoritative cost sources.
- We will not turn an index, broad household-spending measure, or rule of thumb into a local contractor quote.
Search and AI discovery
Pages are organized around a clear user task and expose their calculation and limits in readable HTML. Structured data is descriptive metadata; it does not guarantee ranking, rich results, or citations in AI answers.
New location or project pages should only be added when there is distinct search intent, usable local evidence, a materially different result, and enough explanation to help the visitor.
